Hi, and thanks for responding to my advert — or maybe someone referred you, or you clicked a link somewhere. Either way, I'm glad you're here. My name's James Coetzee, and I run a marketing business called Knot So Ordinary Digital Marketing, based in Knysna.
As you'll see, this isn't really a traditional homepage. It's more of a conversation about why you're here and what you'd want to know from me. So let me tell you a little about myself. Alongside my own company, I consult for two others and run advertising campaigns for their clients too.
How did I get into this? Well, it started when I invented a children's educational program and tried to do my own advertising — and I burnt my fingers badly. I won't go into the whole sad tale (it still stings), but here's what I took away from it: an advertising campaign can look successful — clicks, enquiries, even sales — and still cost you so much that you lose money and never turn a profit.
That lesson changed everything for me. It's why I believe advertising has only one real job: it should make your business more money than it costs. Everything I do starts from there.
So why are you here? Maybe you're planning your first campaign, maybe you've tried before and it didn't pay off, or maybe you just want honest advice instead of another sales pitch. Whatever it is, why not give me a shout? Book a time and let's chat about what you're planning or need done. If I can help, I'll tell you how. If I can't, I'll tell you that too.
Pick a time that suits you. It's free, there's no obligation, and by the end you'll know whether advertising can pay you back — or whether it can't.
— James Coetzee. I build and run every campaign myself, so from the first chat to the last report, you're dealing with me — not a junior, not a call centre.
"A steady stream of new patient leads… the results have been phenomenal." — Nke Mosoma, dental surgery owner
Most advertising is guesswork dressed up as strategy. I work by a method instead. We start with your numbers: what a customer is worth to you, and what one would realistically cost to win. When those numbers work — and for most good businesses they do — I build and run the campaign for you, and I do it so that you can always see, in rand, whether your advertising is paying you back.
That's what you're really buying into: not just a campaign, but a way of working where profit is something you can measure and manage, instead of hope for. When the work is done, you keep it — you'll understand your true cost to win a customer, and how to tell whether your advertising is profitable.
And if the numbers don't work? I'll tell you plainly — free, no strings. I'd rather send you off with an honest answer than sell you something that won't pay.
Don't take my word for it. Here's what the method looks like in real businesses.
“The only purpose of advertising is to make sales. It is profitable or unprofitable according to its actual returns.”
Claude Hopkins · Scientific Advertising, 1923What it costs to win a customer, against what a customer is worth — that is the whole job. Here is what the method produced this year for real South African businesses:
R846 brought 302 direct messages — 10 became new paying patients. The first patient alone repaid the entire spend.
R10,212 sent 8,098 local buyers through to browse the range.
R28,868 opened 3,867 conversations with interested buyers.
R1,971 started 243 real conversations with potential clients.
R2,488 put stock in front of 4,377 actively looking buyers.
R1,140 brought 50 serious enquiries from people ready to buy.
R694 generated 12 direct leads for large fabrication projects.
Look at those construction leads — R57.89 each, against R2.80 for dental. Expensive? It depends entirely on what a customer is worth. One fabrication contract is worth tens of thousands of rand. The cost of a lead means nothing on its own. It only means something next to what a customer is worth.
And when I do that maths for your business, my own fee sits inside it, not outside it. It's paid once, repaid by your first handful of customers, and then it's gone from your numbers. There's no monthly retainer working against you.
R14.50 of profit for every R1 spent.
These aren't projections. They were recorded day by day in shared worksheets — enquiries, appointments, revenue, profit, ad cost — with the clients reporting every sale. Two practices, the same method. That's what judging advertising by net profitability looks like in practice, and it's how your campaign would be measured too.
I have been working with James on Facebook lead generation and I must say I am impressed with the results. My cost per lead is quite low and yet the lead quality is increasing. The leads are pre-qualified and sales-ready before they hit our CRM. He clearly knows how to test, read the data and adjust fast while sticking to the budget. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for someone to scale leads on Facebook.

I have been working with James for just about a month now to handle the social media marketing for my dental surgery, and the results have been phenomenal. In a very short amount of time we have seen a significant boost in our online exposure and, most importantly, a steady stream of new patient leads. James is professional, strategic, and truly understands how to drive real business growth. If you are looking to scale your business, I highly recommend his services.

“The purpose of advertising is to sell, not to win awards or applause.”
Gary Bencivenga · master direct-response copywriterCustomer acquisition, built backwards from your net profit.
Every marketer starts with ads and hopes profit follows. The Profit-Back System™ is my method for working the other way around: it starts at your bottom line and works backwards — so every rand of advertising is accountable to the profit it creates. Meta and Google are just the vehicles. The method is what you're buying into, and it's what keeps your advertising honest long after the campaign goes live.
Most agencies charge every month, indefinitely — so their income doesn't depend on your campaign ever finishing. I work the other way: the Profit-Back System™ is built, proven, and handed over to you. The first step is just a conversation — everything else follows from there.
“Most advertising is done without justification. It is merely presumed to pay. A little test might show a way to multiply returns.”
Claude Hopkins · Scientific Advertising, 1923Years ago I sold my own product and engaged an agency to advertise it. Here is the part most people don't expect: they succeeded. Sales came in — but the campaign was measured by sales, not by the profitability of the business. I kept asking: "After every cost is paid, what is this customer actually costing my business?" It was never answered. The funds ran out, and I closed the business.
A successful advertising campaign can still fail the business.
The Knot So Ordinary principle: advertising is judged by the net profitability it creates for your business — never by clicks, likes, reach, or even sales. That is not a slogan; it is a lesson I paid for — and the Profit-Back System™ is that lesson, built into a method.
My background is in science, so I'm more at home with real data than with marketing guesswork. I came into advertising the hard way — as the client, spending my own money on my own product and taking my own losses. Then I spent years running campaigns inside an agency before starting Knot So Ordinary. I'm based in Knysna, and I still handle every campaign myself — no juniors, no handing you off. Your accounts and your data are yours from day one.
“We sell — or else.”
David Ogilvy · founder, Ogilvy & MatherHere's the honest truth: every month you advertise without knowing your real numbers, you could be losing money and not see it — that's exactly what happened to me. And every month you wait while a competitor advertises properly, you fall a little further behind. A free chat stops the guessing.
We look at your numbers together, and when they work — as they usually do — I put the Profit-Back System™ to work for your business: written proposal the same day, live within days, aimed at winning you customers at a profit. And in the rare case the maths doesn't work, I'll tell you plainly, and it's cost you nothing but the time. Either way, you come out ahead — either with a campaign built to pay you back and a method for knowing it does, or with an honest answer that saved you a costly mistake.
